Top 10 Slowest Half Century In IPL

JP Duminy- 55 Balls

JP Duminy is regarded as one of the finest cricketers but his image of the finest cricketer got haywire after he took 55 balls to score 50 runs in the Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab match in 2009.

In this match, Punjab could score only 119 runs despite batting first. These runs led to speculations of Mumbai Indians winning the match as scoring 120 runs seemed like a cakewalk.

But when the game began Duminy could score only 59 in 63 deliveries and the team ended their innings at 116/7 in 20 overs.

Duminy who can hit big shots easily was off track in this match and the viewers who were very disappointed by his performance got to witness a completely different side of his.

Parthiv Patel- 53 Balls

After the Chennai Super Kings vs Kings XI, Punjab match in 2010 everyone including Patel was surprised as an aggressive style player could manage to score runs through singles or doubles only.

The former Indian wicket-keeper could only score 58 in 57 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes.

The match was opened by Patel where his approach was slow because of which CSK could score 136/7 in 20 overs having a tie with Kings XI Punjab.

They had a super over to decide the result where Kings XI Punjab won.

These innings led to a lot of criticism against Patel.

Robin Uthappa- 52 Balls

Uthappa is regarded as one of the most powerful and cleanest strikers in short formats. But his 2012 season IPL innings got him backlash from his fans as it was the slowest innings of his career.

In the Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Delhi Daredevils match, he was playing for RCB where he entered the game when RCB was 1/2 but could score only 60 in 58 balls though he played till the end.

The target that RCB gave to Delhi Daredevils was easily chased by them with four overs remaining.

Brendon McCullum- 52 Balls

For most of you seeing Brendon in this list of slowest fifty might be quite surprising as he is known for his aggressive and attacking style.

But in the 2010 IPL season, he took 56 deliveries to score 57 runs. In Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians match MI gave a target of 134 to KKR which was easily chased down by them. KKR achieved this target by losing only one wicket.

Though Brendon took a good number of deliveries to score a mere 50 runs, he became the star of the match as he remained at the crease scoring runs instead of getting out.

Matthew Hayden- 51 Balls

Known for his ability to destroy the best bowling attacks Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden took 57 balls to score 60 runs in the 2009 Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians match.

Though he played an important role in the match he wasn’t as destructive as he holds the reputation of being the one making it the rarest innings of the match.

Hayden played an important role in the match as MI gave CSK a target of 148 which was easily chased down by them, Hayden scoring 60 out of the required 148.

Jacques Kallis- 51 Balls

The consistent batter of South African Cricket, Jacques Kallis is the toughest competitor in the world but in the 2009 match, he focused on maintaining his position on the crease rather than smashing balls.

In a 2009 match, Delhi Daredevils gave a target of 135 to Royal Challengers Bangalore. Though RCB chased this target it was only because Kallis decided to solidify on the crease as Robin Uthappa with whom Kallis opened got out in the first over itself.

By being extremely cautious on the crease Kallis scored 58 in 56 balls.

Though these innings were the slowest in Kallis’s career, he got the reward for his patience as his team, RCB won the match.

Gautam Gambhir- 51 Balls

Gambhir is known for his ability to adapt to different situations. He is a batter who always believed in rotating the strike or executing big shots.

He was always a risk-taker when on the crease.

In the 2010 IPL match, he proved his patience and ability to sail through pressure as Chennai Super Kings gave a target of 113 to Delhi Daredevils but in the first two overs Delhi lost 3 wickets.

Gambhir came 4th to Bat and to make his team win he showed tremendous patience and scored 57 in 56 balls.

David Warner – 50 Balls

Regarded as the most destructive player in modern-day cricket, David lost his form in the 2021 IPL match between Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Chennai Super Kings.

Due to his over-cautious approach in this match, he could only score 57 in 55 deliveries making it the slowest half-century in his career.

Apart from struggling in the innings, he created pressure on his team due to his over-cautious approach.

After his inability to play in his inventive style of strokes Warner withdrew himself from captaincy and dropped out of a few games.

Vijay opened with Brendon Mc Cullum who smashed 54 balls to score 86 runs helping CSK chase the target. While Vijay took 50 deliveries to score 50, making this particular inning the slowest in his career.

Virat Kohli- 45 Balls

In the 2022 IPL between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans, Kholi was watchful of his shots from the beginning of the innings.

He wanted to be back in form but couldn’t and scored 58 in 53 balls before getting clean bowled by Mohammad Shami.

This was Kholi’s 43rd half-century in IPL history. This became the slowest inning of his career however everyone cheered for him as they wanted him to be back in the form for long.
